Caring for Your Veneers: Habits That Protect Your Investment

Woman flossing as part of a daily routine to care for her veneers

Well-made porcelain veneers are remarkably durable, and with the right care they can look beautiful for many years, often well over a decade. The good news is that caring for veneers is not complicated. It mostly comes down to consistent, sensible habits.

Daily care is the foundation

Veneers do not change the basics of good oral hygiene, they make it more important. The natural tooth and gum beneath each veneer still need protection.

  • Brush twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush
  • Floss daily to keep the gum line healthy where the veneer meets the tooth
  • Rinse and stay hydrated, especially after coffee, tea or red wine

Highly abrasive whitening toothpastes are best avoided, as they can dull the polish of the porcelain over time.

Habits to avoid

Porcelain is strong, but it is not indestructible. The most common cause of veneer damage is not normal eating, it is using teeth as tools.

If you would not do it to a fine glass, do not do it to your veneers.
  • Do not bite hard objects like ice, pens or fingernails
  • Do not use your teeth to open packaging
  • Be mindful with very hard or sticky foods

Protecting against grinding

If you grind or clench your teeth, especially at night, mention it to Dr. Laleh. Grinding places repeated stress on veneers, and a custom nightguard is a simple, effective way to protect both your veneers and your natural teeth while you sleep.

Keep up with regular visits

Routine checkups and cleanings let your dentist monitor the health of the teeth and gums supporting your veneers, and catch small issues early. Professional cleanings also keep your veneers looking their brightest.

The Simple Version

Treat your veneers like natural teeth, with a little extra care. Good hygiene, no using teeth as tools, a nightguard if you grind, and regular checkups.

With these habits, your veneers should keep looking as natural and refined as the day they were placed.
